THE KENYAN BRACELET



The Indians have their saris, the Chinese have the Qipao and Kenyans have their bracelet.It seems to be the most common article worn by Kenyans,from all backgrounds and tribes.


The bracelet,is usually made of beads.The use of beads to make accessories such as bracelets,necklaces,even shoes is an activity most prevalent with the Maasai. That's why's ,you can easily get these bracelets been sold by Maasai hawkers and vendors in most places of the country.


The bracelet; made of the colours of the Kenyan flag, is reminiscent of the values Kenyans hold dear .Red is for the blood shed by the freedom fighters who fought for the country's independence.Black is the colour of the people.Green represents the abundant agriculture that fuels the country's economy,while white a symbol of peace .To remind us that no matter what,we should choose peace for our country.


Why do Kenyans wear the bracelet,one obvious reason,is that it is a sign of patriotism .It might seem like an understated way to show patriotism,but you will find that Kenyans have a culture of loving what is their own.


This is why you'll find that even when the country is in the pits,Kenyans still find a way to pull together and unite.


Another important reason is that it gives one a sense of identity.Picture this; you are out and about in a foreign land,you feel stranded,drifting away in a sea of people speaking an unfamiliar language.You crave home,something familiar,someone to remind you of your motherland,then you see it.A hand,doning a curious bracelet.You know these colours by heart.Instantly,you are not alone anymore,you have a piece of home with you.


The bracelet is useful especially to members of the diaspora for one can easily and happily identify fellow Kenyans.


That said,the bracelet is also a fashion statement.Several celebrities have been spotted rocking it,including David Beckham's daughter and the actor Luka Sabbatt.





The bracelet,like our national anthem,is a symbol most Kenyans celebrate.Twitter had a field day when people noticed the bracelet on a contestant on the popular reality show Love Island.Further investigation proved that Justine,grew up in Kenya,as a Congolese refugee, and thankful for the time she spent here,she carries Kenya every where she goes,by wearing the bracelet.







This bracelet is the ultimate symbol of unity among Kenyans and wearing it is propagating a culture of togetherness.
